Helpful to have this information. Thank you!
Hmm I cut off my parents emotionally when I was 14 after a lifetime (at that point) of emotional abandonment and bullying (resulting in homelessness in mid teens) All of the work I have done to resolve this for myself and future generations has happened over subsequent decades separately from them as they are not interested in having any level of authentic or equal relationship. We do make contact occasionally on birthdays mostly and I accept completely their limitations without those limitations being taken on as any final limitation on my growth. I appreciate the delineation of a few groups of people where cut off can be reasonable as I believe reconciliation and forgiveness can often be premature and take the form of turning away from in-depth processing of the underlying feelings and dynamics that are passed through generations. I have opted for depth processing and rescuing my physical and emotional health from the impact of CPTSD over nurturing connection with family as I tried to do throughout my childhood. There may be scope for me increasing beyond small talk with parents though this can often backfire turning into devaluing and gaslighting me. I put all my life's efforts instead into being a trustworthy, regulated and aware parent with my child.

Thank you
I’m a graduate student of MFT looking soon for the exam 🙏❤️
Thanks for posting, Dr Gehart! Love your work and dedication to our field.
Thanks so much!
Could you please post the link?
You are my go to girl for all things MFT. I read but before I start writing, I watch your videos to tie up any confusions! You rock Dr. Gehart!
Hi Ashley, Thanks so much!! It is such a fun and amazing field!
@@DianeRGehartPhD Do you ever host workshops? I would love to see you in person one day. I go to Abilene Christian, and you were the first author that helped me better understand things. The field is fun, and it is so fun learning it, but it is rather ambiguous, and I am learning to trust the process! I would love to see you in a workshop setting!
Guy called Prof Charl Vorster, under guidance of a guy called Prof George Wiehahn, converted the models of communications theory, Haley's approaches, the Milan Group, and the Palo Alto group's approaches into an individual therapeutic model. Was highly effective. Probably the most effective thing I have ever seen. But, it is incredibly difficult to understand and implement.
Telling my clients this all the time. “Don’t beat yourself up for things not improving instantly or in large ways right away.”
As a student about to head into internship your content is extremely helpful! So glad I found your channel, love the juice!
Book Atomic Habits teach that...start small
I applaud your effort here. Yes, Family work ~ assessment via family history ~ such a cornerstone. Bio/Psycho/Social. All of that and so much more. Carrying the torch you are. I can not talk about myself or "what I know and have experienced." I pray that you are finding your audience. Mine was always through the ebb and flow of the state budget, state politics, the economy. Home visits I did, meetings, family court, assessment, agency administration versus direct practice. for many many years. OOOPS ~ not about me. My bad. Your audience. Thank you for carrying this forward. ~~~. Mr. Not Worthy from New Hampshire.
This was amazing. Thank you.
I think the easiest way is to bring the couple or whole family to a church and learn accept about the preachings of Jesus Christ about forgiveness.
Thank you for the informative video. As a psychologist who works with children, I appreciate the mindfulness exercises you shared. However, I have noticed that many children have difficulty following meditation instructions and find it boring. I believe that incorporating tools and games, similar to those in your previous videos, may be more effective. I would appreciate your guidance on how to integrate these elements into my work with children.
1) Did u consider focusing oriented therapy, Prof DIane? Gendlin's approach emphasizes the "felt sense," an individual's holistic, bodily experience of a situation or problem. The goal is to help clients access and symbolize their felt sense, gaining new insights and emotional shifts. This process can be beneficial at various stages of problem development: When a problem is rising, focusing can help clients become aware of their early bodily responses to the problem, potentially preventing it from escalating. When a problem is at its worst, focusing can help clients explore their emotional experiences more deeply, uncovering underlying meanings and fostering self-understanding. As a problem subsides, focusing can help clients integrate their new insights and emotional shifts, promoting continued growth and resilience. FOT can be quite flexible in terms of its applicability across different stages of problem development> What do u think? 2) Did you consider that while we attempt to make sense of our client's internal world, i can be too cognitive oriented? It would be helpful to faciliate clients to access and explore their immediate, lived experience rather than just talking about it at an intellectual level. For example, we can "Does that fit with your experience?", "As we are talk about this, what are u noticing inside?", "Let's pause for a while to sense the body and let it tell u what it wants u to know about the siuation". Happy to hear your valuable thoughts! Thank you!
Great work Prof Diane! Wonder what are your thoughts on clients having psychotherapy for so many years? 15 years are really very long. I thought we should faciliate them to be their own therapist ideally.
I’m the practice of opening my private practice but it’s really daunting and scary. I fear making a mistake or getting in trouble. Marketing and getting enough clients is scary 😱
I am watching this two yrs after fact, but Congratulations are still in order. Dr. Gerhart is have heard so many GREAT things about your prep course. I will be looking at purchasing your course around Nov of this year ❤
🥰

Hi I am in grad school with the goal of becoming a LMFT/LPCC. Thanks for these great lectures!
Studying for the BBS LMFT clinical exams ❤😊
Thank you for this informative presentation. I thought every therapy included these. This sounds like a great theraphy.
What would be the best way to give feedback ?
Where can we find them :)?
This is a feedback from Chinese college student, I feel so fortunate to view this video, which explained clearly core techniques of structural family therapy. I agree most the point that making boundaries is different from cutting off connections with family members. On the contrary, making boundaries and restructuring family system could help family members feel more comfortable and flexible in their relationships, explore efficient coping mechanisms to deal with conflicts. And finally I’m so grateful for such a treasure of study resources, as a donated dance of Minuchin. Based on the past reading I could understand most of video’s viewpoints, some details are a little difficult for me but I would review them later. Thanks again!❤
Feedback is soooo important!
Where can we watch the Tedx talk
You have gone completely woke and I don’t want anything to do with this.
This makes me want to puke.
Wao such a nice way to explain this.
What type of therapist were you prior to receiving your MFT?
❤
I missed it - thanks so much for uploading it here! Can't wait to watch it
Am grad student and love your videos and course work. You mentioned in another video about an ethical way to discuss limits to confidentiality and consent. Can you please provide content on that?
Can you please do a video on how to deliver limits to confidentiality?
do you have notes lol😀
I really don't understand the example (timestamp about: 43:00) given for the therapeutic double bind. The issue the wife had was that her husband isn't spontaneously romantic, so prescribing it as the therapist does absolutely nothing for her if he manages to come up with something "new" because he had been commanded (by the therapist) to do it. It's prescribed and therefore automatically not spontaneous. If he ends up doing what he's told NOT to do (i.e. use his wife's past suggestion of flowers), I think it highly unlikely the wife is going to be able to see that as him doing it "uncommanded" and therefore make it seem spontaneous because: 1.) He is commanded to do something, 2). His wife had commanded the flowers before, 3.) He was told NOT to give flowers and he's giving flowers, which shows how little thought he is again putting in. So this example makes zero sense to me; it's not a win-win at all; the therapist is falling into the trap of repeating the SAME FAILED SOLUTION. Instead, they need to discuss how they show love and understand the meanings behind how they show and receive love. Or discuss whether this is a deal-breaker for their relationship if he's just never going to be spontaneous. Ask if there are other ways of showing love they'd be willing to work on, or is this the only way? If this is the only way, what does the husband need to allow his spontaneity to come through: Breathing room? No commands/requests for a while? Appreciation instead of criticism for attempts even if they're imperfect? Etc. Discuss with the wife how every command/suggestion she makes is shooting herself in the foot because she's limiting what she can see from him as "spontaneous" with each request. So discuss with her how to ask for what she needs without that; find other ways she can cope and communicate. Doesn't that make more sense than this double-bind thing? Or is this example just way off on how it's supposed to be used?
As a required course lecture, the sound is too low. Ambient sounds, such as vehicles passing by or sirens in the distance drown out the sound. Even the neighbors dog subtracts from the material. Please consider redubbing or re-recording the audio.
hey, did you take down your previous video on structural family therapy??
Is the volume working on this video?
This was really, really helpful for my family therapy exam next week. Thank you!
